about

This song is about John Snow. About the John Snow Society:

The Society promotes the memory of Dr John Snow , the pioneer of epidemiology – he famously removed the handle from the Broad Street pump in Soho to stop a cholera outbreak in 1854 – and celebrated anaesthetist – he twice administered obstetric anaesthesia to Queen Victoria, who commented on ‘the blessed chloroform’. The Society has over 3,500 members worldwide, and membership is open to anyone who wishes to celebrate the memory of John Snow. We have relied on the fees from new members to support our activities, which include arranging for eminent speakers to give the Annual Pumphandle Lecture.

lyrics

M.I.A.S.M.A
B.A.C.I.LLLL.I

The cry went up, "A plague on golden square!",

A mystic mist of foulness on the air,

While some came down from far with jug in hand,

At Broad Street to draw water from the land,

John Snow

One man looked, his mind was ill at ease

Hypotheses, cartographies of disease,

A theory grew from what he knew he knew

Considering radical action to save the few

John Snow

What in heavens name is Snow doing?
He’s going to take the handle from the pump
How will we get water
Someone stop him
The handle of the pump is gone

M.I.A.S.M.A
B.A.C.I.LLLL.I

We all know (it’s down to John Snow),
And his standardised mortality ratio,
You put the number of deaths the numerator on top,
The denominator goes on the bottom then stop.
